Negar Mottahedeh is an Iranian cultural critic and theorist cultural critic and theorist focused on Shiism and Karbala, specializing in interdisciplinary and feminist contributions to the fields of Middle Eastern Studies and Film and Media Studies. She has published five books on Iranian Cinema, the history of reform, revolution and the uses of various media in protest. She is also known for her work on Ta'ziya. In particular, she traces the range of political operations in which ta'ziyeh and Muharram rituals have been engaged both as a popular form that creates non-official public spaces, and as a state-sponsored form.
